CHAPTER 11

DEVIN

She was hurt.

No, she was dying.

My soul cracked.

I ran to her, but Kent blocked me, his back turned to me as he picked up my woman. I growled in response, wanting to rip his head off despite him being my friend and knowing he wouldn’t hurt her.

“Kill that demon!” he shouted. “I got her.”

I looked beyond them to the demon just standing there, left hand dripping with blood. Her blood. It stopped moving when it saw me. It wasn’t fear. It was as if it were waiting. For what? I didn’t care. In one burst, I transformed into my demon form and flew at the demon. We crossed the room to the nearest wall, plaster falling behind the demon as his back connected. He dug his claws into my arms, but I didn’t feel pain. I only felt pure rage. I wanted to rip his head off or bite his throat out.

The demon wrapped his long arms around me, constricting my wings. The pressure squished my body, restricting my breathing. However, I was stronger, and I didn’t have time to fuck around with this low-level demon while my woman was on the brink of death.

I released a shout of heated anger, opening my mouth wide and biting through the neck of the beast. For extra measure, I maneuvered my hands so that I was able to rip open the demon’s stomach with my claws. The demon let go of me and slid to the ground; its head toppled to the side of its shoulder, guts leaking out of its stomach. The fucker was strong but not stronger than me. Still, it should have been more of a fight. What was this?

I couldn’t spend any time caring. I flew out of the room, looking for her, not caring who I scared along the way in my blood-splattered demonic form. I soon found her down the hall back to the front of the building. She lay on a couch with Kent and a few other people standing over her. Their hands were splayed out, mouths chanting in a language I didn’t know. Her eyes were closed, face relaxed. I saw no rise and fall of her chest.

My head buzzed with adrenaline, heart thumped way too fast in my chest from fear. She couldn’t die. She was giving, kind, smart. The patience she showed me, the affection, motivation. She couldn’t leave. Couldn’t leave me.

“Move!” I shouted.

The startled witches looked at me but did not move. I snarled at them, making them jump back.

Kent raised his hands. “He’s a friend. Let him help.” He looked to me cautiously as they all parted ways. “We don’t have enough strength,” Kent began in a cracked voice. “We’ve slowed down the bleeding, but we can’t seem to heal her fast enough. Her injuries were too severe.”

Were? He spoke as if it were over. It wasn’t. I had an option. An option she wouldn’t like, but it was the best compromise I could give her because my woman wouldn’t die.
